Strategic Studies and Defense Analysis
Bachelor of Science (BS)
Norwich University in Northfield, VT
It is not surprising that Norwich University’s first online degree completion program, the Bachelor of Science in Strategic Studies and Defense Analysis (SSDA), is offered exclusively to active duty, retired, and reserve military personnel who are assigned to USSOCOM. The reputation of Norwich University is built not only on the quality of instruction, but also on the legacy of nearly 200 years of graduates. Our graduates are noted for their leadership and service to the nation, and we take our mission to educate in order to help them advance in the battlefield, boardroom, and beyond very seriously. Specially designed for active duty, Reserve and National Guard soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines assigned to or retired from one of the subordinate commands within the U.S. Special Operations Command, and NATO Special Operations Forces, the Bachelor of Science in Strategic Studies and Defense Analysis program focuses on strategies for improving the security, external relationships, and overall well-being of communities and countries. Students gain the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to develop these strategies through a comprehensive curriculum that builds on their military education and experience, enabling them to apply what they learn in class to initiatives and field exercises related to their current or past areas of deployment. Students are taught by a highly knowledgeable faculty that includes the former assistant provost of the Naval Postgraduate School, retired military officers, and defense strategy experts from across the globe. Research, critical thinking, ethical decision making, and leadership skills are fostered and woven throughout the curriculum, giving students the tools they need to advance within the military or transition to a new career. As part of their final program requirements, students complete a series of in-depth, independent research projects on a country or region of their choosing. Based on their research, students develop recommendations for improving conditions in their selected area that take into consideration the historical, political, cultural, and economic influences at play. In addition to its relevant application in the field, the research findings contribute to the military’s body of knowledge of regions around the globe. An academic credential, such as a bachelor’s degree, has become critically important for career advancement in both the military and the civilian world. As one recent alumnus, James Karr, put it, recruiters and employers in the private sector are reluctant to consider job candidates without this piece of paper, in spite of their training and many accomplishments within the military. This is exactly where the program fits in. The online Strategic Studies and Defense Analysis degree completion program was inspired to capitalize on the unique experiences and training of SOF (Special Operations Forces) at the Special Warfare Center and School (SWCS) at Fort Bragg, NC, and to complement them, helping our students complete their formal education and prepare them for the future - whether it’s advancement within their command or transitioning to a new career in the private sector or public service. When we asked our alumni if they would recommend the Norwich SSDA program to someone they know, our survey respondents* strongly agreed. Maybe it’s because 93% of them feel they are more effective in their jobs as a result of the Norwich SSDA program. A number of attractive career paths may be considered by members of Special Operations armed with a degree in Strategic Studies and Defense Analysis. In a recent survey, 86% of our graduate respondents said they feel their Norwich education gives them a competitive edge in the job market. Today, the Strategic Studies and Defense Analysis program is filled with Special Forces leaders from around the world in all branches of the military. According to a recent alumni survey, more than half of the respondents said they completed their degree while serving active duty in the U.S. military. Another 29% reported that they are currently employed as a civilian in the federal government. In talking with recent graduates, it is clear they felt the Strategic Studies and Defense Analysis degree from Norwich University was relevant to their work in the military and would help facilitate career advancement and transition opportunities.

Business Administration - Business Analytics
Bachelor of Science (BS)
University of Vermont in Burlington, VT
Today's organizations are drowning in vast amounts of data, the consequence of automated data collection tools and advanced database technology. A substantial challenge for organizations is how to use these vast amounts of data to best achieve or maintain a competitive advantage by improving customer relations, product development, business planning, internal processes and/or operations. This is where the field of Business Analytics (BA) comes into play. BA focuses on data-driven decision making with the ultimate goal being the conversion of data into context-specific information to facilitate high quality, timely, value-added business decisions. The BA concentration at the University of Vermont is designed to develop and improve students' technical, quantitative, and analytical abilities as well as their critical thinking skills through courses emphasizing the use of data, technology, optimization and statistical analysis, and predictive and exploratory modeling. Data and numbers are only part of the solution however - students must also understand organizational business models, information flows, and the importance of business processes within the organizational value chain. Students concentrating in BA will take classes covering content in the areas of information systems technology, quantitative methods/tools (operations research, statistics), and business applications (supply chain management, six-sigma quality, marketing research, business process improvement, etc). It is recommended that students who select the BA Concentration pursue a minor in Computer Science, Math or Statistics. The concentration is flexibly designed to align with student interests in a particular area and to incorporate content from the entire Grossman School of Business curriculum. Students in the BA concentration are required to take a minimum of four elective courses - one from each of the three areas. Two courses are required from one area, totaling five courses.

Additionally, you will learn how to effectively present ideas clearly to targeted audiences and collaborate in groups on projects. Students have explored how data analytics is applied in topics varying from social justice, such as analyzing if prisoners from different races, genders and ages get equal sentences for the same crimes, to public safety, in which students looked into car recall data and discovered patterns showing that car manufacturers were actually aware of some deadly problems but failed to report them. And because the Data Analytics major integrates elements from multiple fields, you'll be able to use data analytics to explore these intersections in a unique learning environment. Study Abroad in Montreal We designed the curriculum of our majors to support a semester of international study, which means you can study in another country, or even complete an international internship, and still graduate on time. You have the option to study abroad at one of the Champlain campuses in Montreal, Canada, or Dublin, Ireland. At both international campuses, students can explore the world of ethics in computer sciences with a Global Information & Ethics course or customize their program with a business or communication course. Alternatively, you can take a semester studying anywhere in the world through our Global Partners Program or one of our third-party international study partners. We intentionally help you make these connections and get the real-world experience you need to be prepared for a data analytics internship as soon as the summer after your first year. Such experiential study allows you the chance to tap into your curiosity early on and prepare to make discoveries in the world of big data.
