Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies (MSPAS)
Johnson & Wales University-Providence in Providence, RI
Effective clinicians engage in active listening and empathy; they understand that patients are more than medical records, lab results, body systems and drug interactions. Become a healthcare professional who treats the whole patient — mind, body and spirit — through JWU’s Physician Assistant Studies master’s degree program. You’ll learn to be a collaborative practitioner with the respect, empathy and trust inherent to humanistic healthcare. Our curriculum will prepare you to meet the complex needs of patients — and to develop the critical thinking skills to integrate seamlessly into a patient-centered medical team. Hone your knowledge of clinical medicine, medical science and therapeutics through evidence-based practice at our award-winning, 18,000-square-foot Center for Physician Assistant Studies. One of only a few facilities in the country entirely dedicated to the education of physician assistants, the center provides our students with 24-hour access to cadaver-based anatomy labs with e-study guides at each dissection station and a clinical skills practice center with simulated exam rooms equipped with the latest electronic medical record technology. The first 12 months of the program are devoted to preclinical studies, and the remaining 12 months to clinical experiences in primary care and medical and surgical specialties. Enrollment is limited to 36 students each year and classes begin each June. A CNNMoney/PayScale poll projected nearly 30% job growth in the PA field over the next 10 years. Rhode Island is investing heavily in the health sciences/health care sector as a statewide driver of economic growth. JWU’s PA program, the first in the state, takes advantage of Rhode Island’s strengths as an incubator: small size, high population density and an interlinked medical and education network. Be part of that growth, while gaining a versatile skill set that can be applied to virtually all facets of the medical field, including primary care, hospitalist medicine, surgery and emergency medicine.

Explore the molecular and cellular basis of life through our unique biology program. Our curriculum integrates complementary disciplines that include chemistry, physics, molecular biology and biochemistry — essentials for the future of scientific progress. You’ll be exposed to interactive and problem-based learning in classes and labs as well as through an optional internship. A broad range of opportunities allow you to explore your interests, whether in a research lab or in an environmental role. Upon graduation, you can pursue careers in the areas of life, physical and social sciences, such as biological technician, microbiologist or medical laboratory scientist. Through advanced graduate work, career opportunities expand to include even more positions in healthcare, education and academic settings, including, but not limited to, forensic scientist, environmental scientist, zoologist, wildlife biologist or physician assistant. If you’re planning on going to medical school, you can fulfill pre-med requirements by expanding your studies through electives such as human anatomy, physiology and immunology. The Biology bachelor's degree program provides a strong background of critical thinking skills and knowledge needed for further study in professional and graduate schools, and for careers in biological science. The study of biology enables students to gain an understanding of the principles that govern life from the basic biochemistry of living cells to that of complex ecosystems. This understanding helps students identify and address the biological problems associated with human beings and their environments. Upon completion of the program, graduates are expected to: Understand and apply the fundamental biological concepts of evolution, structure and function, information exchange and storage, and transformation of energy and matter to explain biological systems from molecules to communities. Communicate scientific information using oral and written arguments, and visual presentation. Identify, evaluate and analyze scientific information. Apply the scientific method and critical thinking skills to address scientific questions. Apply mathematical and computational skills and interdisciplinary concepts and knowledge to interpret biological phenomena. Recognize ethical concerns pertaining to biological science and apply ethical practice in the scientific process. Evaluate the influence that biological science has on society including the historical context of major findings in modern biology. The courses in this program have been designed to provide students with a strong foundation in the fundamental principles of biology. The biology courses allow students to explore the molecular and cellular basis of life, structure and function of organisms, and ecological interactions of organisms. The physical science courses provide opportunities for students to break the barriers between traditional sciences and integrate their knowledge of biology, chemistry and physics, a practice that is essential to the future of scientific progress. To support student success in the Biology program, science faculty members are committed to following best practices for science education. This includes using active learning pedagogies in the classroom and guided inquiry learning pedagogies in the laboratories, and providing quality internships opportunities. These teaching pedagogies are student-centered, interactive and focused on problem-based learning. They provide students with multiple opportunities to gain experiential training and use critical-thinking skills, both of which are essential for being successful members of the scientific community. Graduates are prepared for careers that include, but are not limited to, biological technicians, forensic scientists, environmental scientists, microbiologists, medical laboratory scientists, zoologists and wildlife biologists.
