The curriculum is designed for students who plan to enter business, industry, or government as statisticians; to become professional actuaries; or to continue on to graduate school in statistics/biostatistics or another field where quantitative ability is valuable (operations research, medicine, public health, demography, psychology, etc.). Students can choose to undertake special projects to gain experience in data analysis, design, and statistical computing. Also, experience may be gained with local industry and other organizations for those interested in quality control, industrial statistics, survey and market research or forecasting, for example. Statistics is a mathematical science extensively used in a wide variety of fields. Indeed, every discipline which gathers and interprets data uses statistical concepts and procedures to understand the information implicit in their data. Statisticians become involved in efforts to solve real world problems by designing surveys and experimental plans, constructing and interpreting descriptive statistics, developing and applying statistical inference procedures, and developing and investigating stochastic models or computer simulations. To investigate new statistical procedures requires a knowledge of mathematics and computing as well as statistical theory. To apply concepts and procedures effectively also calls for an understanding of the field of application. Students pursuing the Bachelor of Science in Mathematical Sciences in CEMS may select statistics as their major. In addition, students pursuing a Bachelor of Arts from the College of Arts and Sciences may concentrate in statistics as a part of their mathematics major.

The mathematics curriculum is quite flexible. It is designed to provide a sound basic training in mathematics that allows a student to experience the broad sweep of mathematical ideas and techniques, to utilize the computer in mathematics, and to develop an area of special interest in the mathematical sciences. The Bachelor of Science in Mathematics is our most extensive program, complemented with study in an allied field using mathematics in its applications. Furthermore, individuals trained in the mathematical sciences have many opportunities to use their knowledge. Mathematics and statistics majors are equally well-prepared for jobs in business, industry, government, or teaching and for advanced study in graduate school. For example, UVM mathematics and statistics graduates are often employed in the computer, information, and communications industries, in engineering, in the insurance business, in government agencies, and in a variety of other occupations. Many attend graduate school in the mathematical sciences, business, the physical sciences, social sciences, medicine, dentistry, or law. The Statistics Program offers biostatistics, statistics, and probability courses for the entire University community along with traditional degree programs and individually designed degree programs emphasizing statistics applied to other fields. The degree programs are designed primarily for students who plan careers in business, actuarial science, industry, and government or advanced training in disciplines that make extensive use of statistical principles and methods. The Program faculty is deeply involved in consulting and collaborative research in a wide variety of fields, including industry, agriculture and in the basic and clinical medical sciences. These research activities along with the research of other quantitative UVM faculty offer students unique opportunities to apply their classroom training to real world problems. Qualified students with the goal of learning statistics to use in a specialized area of application are especially encouraged to take advantage of these cooperative arrangements. Program faculty have active statistics research efforts in areas such as bioinformatics, sequential analysis, three stage sampling, time series analysis, survival data analysis, discriminant analysis, bootstrap methods, categorical data analysis, measurement error models, and experimental design. Students seeking the traditional graduate degree in statistics (along with course work in mathematics and computer science, if desired) have excellent opportunities to participate in the faculty's research. The Statistics Program has established an internship affiliation with the Vermont Department of Health. The internship program provides an excellent opportunity to interact with researchers from various disciplines on a variety projects.

There are two areas of concentration: pure mathematics and applied mathematics. The programs emphasize the interaction between these two areas and the common role of scientific computation. Mathematics majors are expected to acquire competence in calculus, linear algebra, and probability and statistics. Through these fields, students are to develop understanding and skills in mathematical reasoning, logical deduction, data analysis and interpretation, and problem solving at various levels and in various contexts. Students will communicate effectively broader mathematical reasoning approaches and more specific problem solving steps. Students will progress from a procedural/computational understanding of mathematics to a broad understanding encompassing logical reasoning, generalization, abstraction, and formal proof. They are to formulate definitions and apply methods of direct and indirect proof. Students will work with ideas and approaches representing the breadth of mathematical sciences, ranging from continuous to discrete and theoretical to applied. Students will undertake an exploration of at least one advanced topic of their own choosing. This will require them to carefully read, analyze, and create mathematical arguments and draw on ideas and make connections with previous coursework. Students will have experience with a variety of technological tools, such as computer algebra systems, visualization software, statistical packages, and computer programming languages. Math professors here are very proactive mentors. The Masters of Arts in Mathematics Education bridges the gap between Mathematics and Mathematics Education Theory and Practice and prepares teachers for instructional leadership as master teachers of mathematics. The program extends the professional competence of mathematics teachers through an in-depth study of mathematics and mathematics teaching and learning. The courses feature content based on the Common Core Standards and are designed to provide information that is compatible with those requirements. Program participants will demonstrate their knowledge through individual and collaborative projects and presentations, field-based curriculum implementation and evaluation, and reflective classroom inquiry. The degree, which is a collaborative effort of the Department of Education and the Department of Mathematics, provides opportunities for mathematics teachers to deepen their understanding of mathematics by learning advanced mathematical topics in relation to the mathematics that they actually teach. In addition, the program develops teachers' understanding of-and ability to apply-education research into their own practice. The courses allow teachers to learn math-specific technologies for implementing appropriate mathematics curriculum and to continue to develop as a professional educators. As a culminating project, teachers will conduct research in their own classrooms, where they will analyze how aspects of their own practice will have an impact on their own as well as their students' learning.
