Take your place among other health professionals in a range of clinical mental health settings with this degree. The curriculum plan for a Master of Arts in Counseling requires students to take a core of required courses, additional specialization course work in the area of interest, a personal growth experience and an internship with accompanying seminar. No thesis is required. Whenever possible, faculty individualize the program to meet each student’s specific career objectives. Individually designed internships are developed with area agencies, schools, businesses and colleges. Most courses are offered in the late afternoon or evenings, on weekends and in the summer. Students generally require three to four years to complete the master’s degree; all students are required to complete their programs within five years. Selected courses are open to non-degree students on a space-available basis.

The University of Vermont Graduate Counseling Program is designed to prepare students with the professional knowledge and skills they need to act as facilitators of change and growth for individuals, groups, and organizations. Counseling Program graduates receive a Master of Science degree and are prepared to work as professional counselors in a wide variety of settings. The Clinical Mental Health (M.S. Degree) and School Counseling (M.S. Degree) programs of the UVM Counseling Program are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), the national accrediting body for counselor education programs. The CACREP accreditation status of the two programs has been extended to October 31, 2020. Our College is also accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). There are two tracks of study in the Graduate Counseling Program: the school counseling track (48 credits) and the mental health track (60 credits). Students may elect to enroll in both tracks - the Dual option, which is 68 credits. The Graduate Counseling Program (both tracks) is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). The school counseling track meets the requirements set by the State of Vermont Department of Education for preparing school counselors (K-12) for licensure in Vermont, and the mental health counseling track meets the academic requirements set by the Vermont Board of Allied Mental Health Practitioners for preparing clinical mental health counselors for licensure in Vermont.
