History
Bachelor of Arts (BA)
Bennington College in Bennington, VT
History is a challenging and rewarding conversation with the past. Our history faculty, whose expertise spans American and international history as well as early modern European intellectual history, mediate these dialogues in classrooms that are alive with “the pastness of the past—a rich understanding of the ways in which historical actors lived in and engaged with worlds that were completely different from our own. We introduce students to the primary texts that will become their conversation partners, and facilitate their ability to find patterns and points of congruence that enable them to continue this conversation on their own. Our curriculum presents an array of ways for students to internalize historical thinking, and incorporate it into their work in other fields. In addition to courses on American and international history, we offer courses on international law, the Constitution, diplomacy, human rights, and local history; we teach the histories of science, magic, medicine, books, and gender. Advanced projects classes and tutorials offer opportunities to pursue individual and collaborative interdisciplinary independent projects. In studying history, students learn to work with primary sources and put those sources in context. They work with secondary sources, and use classroom discussion as a collaborative process for working out readings, ideas, and meanings. They learn to formulate their own arguments and develop the writing skills that will allow them to express their arguments in a clear and cogent fashion. In short, they learn to engage and contribute to a larger intellectual community.

Bachelor of Arts (BA)
Green Mountain College in Poultney, VT
History at Green Mountain is designed to nurture and produce professional skills while studying the infinitely varied and exciting world of the human past. The history program at Green Mountain College combines uncommon academic rigor with real world experience. A few examples: Jake Musial ’11 interned as a lab technician in the North American Archaeology Lab of The Museum of Natural History. Clara Walsh ’13 made a presentation on art and architectural traditions in the Islamic world at the Seventh Northwest World History Association Conference. It’s rare for an undergraduate student to present shoulder-to-shoulder with professional academics, but it happens often here at GMC. Individualized attention, facilitated through small classes and our advising program, helps students move on to top graduate schools or into jobs in their field of study. The curriculum stresses developing and sharpening student skills which have broad applications to such careers as law school, museum studies, archival positions as well as many other graduate and professional programs. The program offers a wide range of courses in American, Asian, European, and world history. Many of those courses have an environmental theme in keeping with the overall mission of the College. The senior seminar provides students with the opportunity to conduct original research involving primary sources on a topic of their choosing to demonstrate the abilities and approaches they have developed in the program.

Master of Arts (MA)
Norwich University in Northfield, VT
Our Master of Arts in History program builds on our rich institutional history, leading students through a comprehensive analysis of the major developments, events, and figures of the past. Students can choose from one of two tracks: American History, which explores our nation’s past from Colonial times to the end of the Cold War, and World History, which covers the dawn of human civilization through the late 20th century. For nearly two centuries, Norwich University has played a vital role in history as America's first private military college, the nation’s first private college to offer civil engineering instruction, and the birthplace of ROTC. We are also the proud alma mater of more than 18,000 alumni - many of whom have made significant contributions to our country’s development, including Edwin Ferry Johnson, chief engineer of the Northern Pacific Railroad; Harry Bates Thayer, president and chairman of AT&T in the 1920s; and General Gordon L. Sullivan, chief of staff of the U.S. Army in the 1990s. Students are guided by expert faculty members, all of whom hold PhDs and are engaged in ongoing scholarly work. Students also have access to our highly capable reference staff members, who provide research assistance via email, phone, and chat, as well as our dedicated distance-learning librarian. The program culminates in the writing of a thesis or capstone paper, which students use as a platform to develop expertise in their particular area of interest. A master’s degree in history from Norwich University gives you the foundation to teach at the high school and community college level or to pursue a PhD for teaching at the university level. You can also apply your degree to pursue one of numerous careers in history such as a researcher, archivist, curator, or content producer for schools, museums, and other public history venues. If you are currently in the military, our online master’s degree in history program may help you advance within the military or transition to a new career. For those whose interests are more intellectually oriented than career-focused, our program offers a formalized structure for developing subject matter expertise as well as advanced research and writing skills that can be applied toward personal scholarly pursuits. Whether their goals were to sharpen writing and research skills, develop a nuanced perspective on the past, or garner subject matter-expertise that could aid in a teaching, writing, or other career, numerous Norwich alumni have proved that the pursuit of an online master's degree in history is a fruitful endeavor. As leaders, teachers, historians, and lifelong learners, our students have a passion for using history and their skills to make an impact in their organizations and their communities.

University of Vermont in Burlington, VT
To help students acquire these necessary skills and to gain insight into the meaning and matter of history, UVM's department of history offers a wide variety of courses aimed at the first-year student, all of which require analysis and writing in some form. The department recommends that incoming first-year students take any of its introductory courses, numbered 09 through 096, all of which assume no previous university-level work in history. Students should select the introductory course or course sequence that seems closest to their current interests. First-year students should not take any 100-level history courses without first consulting the instructor, and normally no first-year student will be allowed into a 100-level course without AP credits or their equivalent.
