Licensed physical therapist assistants work in public or private hospitals, clinics, school systems or other health agencies. The Physical Therapist Assistant program is a full-time, day program. It consists of a variety of courses that includes physical therapy theory and practice as well as supporting courses from general education. Students who successfully complete this program are eligible to take the licensure examination for physical therapist assistants.

Occupational therapy is the use of purposeful activity and interventions to promote health and achieve functional outcomes in performance areas such as activities of daily living, work, and productive activities, and play or leisure activities. Achieving functional outcomes means to develop, improve or restore the highest level of independence to any individual who is limited by physical injury or illness, cognitive impairment, psychosocial dysfunction, mental illness, developmental or learning disability or an adverse environmental condition. Occupational therapy helps people of all ages lead productive, satisfying lives. The Occupational Therapy Assistant program is offered at the Newport County Campus. It is an evening/weekend program; however, fieldwork experiences are offered during the day. Although Occupational Therapy Assistant courses are offered at the Newport County Campus, the required general education courses may be taken at other CCRI campuses or sites prior to acceptance. All fieldwork courses shall be completed within 18 months following completion of the academic preparation. Students successfully completing the accredited program earn an Associate in Applied Science degree in Occupational Therapy Assistant (AAS_OCTA) and are eligible to sit for the national certification examination for occupational therapy assistants, which is administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy, Inc. (NBCOT). An individual must successfully pass the certification examination to apply for licensure to practice as a certified occupational therapy assistant in the state of Rhode Island.

You’ll work side by side with your professors in the Exercise Physiology Lab and the Behavioral Medicine Lab, using state-of-the art equipment to measure body composition, cardiac health, metabolic rate, breathing, stress and other factors affecting human health. You’ll also have the opportunity to serve as research assistants to professors with ongoing studies involving lung function during exercise and biofeedback as a tool for exercise motivation. Our program emphasizes the importance and effect of physical activity and exercise on the health and well-being of all individuals, and expands into related areas such as coaching and leadership under the umbrella of Professional Physical Education. The Sports Leadership and Physical Education program contains the Physical Education licensure major, the Exercise and Sport Science concentration, the Coaching minor and elements of the Sport Management minor. The Physical Education major qualifies candidates for licensure to teach in grades PreK-12. Course work around the theme “Moving and Learning” includes a series of courses designed to provide a background to the field of physical education. Specialty courses assist the student in the development of Physical Education major content and teaching skills important in providing developmentally appropriate aspects of physical education to children and youth in today’s schools. Laboratory experiences in schools throughout the course of study aid students in recognizing the relationship between theory and practice. Students also receive a solid foundation in exercise science allowing a broader depth of knowledge in physical activity. The opportunity to pursue a concentration in exercise and sport science is available. The Sports Leadership and Physical Education program also boasts of a Coaching minor (non-licensure) that is available to all University students. Contact the program coordinator for more information. Courses in general education and professional education as well as a liberal arts and sciences major concentration are required. A major concentration in Exercise and Sport Science is available to students in the Physical Education major. It is possible to have one course fulfill two requirements but the credits only count once.
