Associate of Applied Science (AAS)
Community College of Rhode Island in Warwick, RI
Occupational therapy is the use of purposeful activity and interventions to promote health and achieve functional outcomes in performance areas such as activities of daily living, work, and productive activities, and play or leisure activities. Achieving functional outcomes means to develop, improve or restore the highest level of independence to any individual who is limited by physical injury or illness, cognitive impairment, psychosocial dysfunction, mental illness, developmental or learning disability or an adverse environmental condition. Occupational therapy helps people of all ages lead productive, satisfying lives. The Occupational Therapy Assistant program is offered at the Newport County Campus. It is an evening/weekend program; however, fieldwork experiences are offered during the day. Although Occupational Therapy Assistant courses are offered at the Newport County Campus, the required general education courses may be taken at other CCRI campuses or sites prior to acceptance. All fieldwork courses shall be completed within 18 months following completion of the academic preparation. Students successfully completing the accredited program earn an Associate in Applied Science degree in Occupational Therapy Assistant (AAS_OCTA) and are eligible to sit for the national certification examination for occupational therapy assistants, which is administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy, Inc. (NBCOT). An individual must successfully pass the certification examination to apply for licensure to practice as a certified occupational therapy assistant in the state of Rhode Island.

Considering a career in the health sciences? There are plenty of choices. Health science encompasses a broad range of occupations and specializations responsible for 9 percent of jobs in the US economy. The need for skilled professionals in these areas is booming, with projected job growth of almost 20 percent by 2024. In this integrative, multidisciplinary program, you’ll start by exploring the basic sciences that relate to health and wellness. Then you’ll delve into nutrition, exercise science, psychology, sociology, public health and economics, and discover their importance to healthcare delivery. Collaborate with other students as you would on a health and wellness team in the field, to improve individual and community outcomes. Gain problem-solving and technological skills to adapt to the changing marketplace and learn how to communicate across diverse populations with empathy and respect. Finally, you’ll synthesize the results of inquiry and research to propose solutions to problems in health and wellness areas that interest you. You’ll have the opportunity to perform health research and epidemiology through internship opportunities that range from local community health agencies to national and international organizations. This flexible program satisfies requirements for a wide variety of pre-health professions. Upon graduation, you’ll be prepared to pursue entry-level positions in areas such as health science and health research. Or choose to pursue graduate study in physician assistant studies, physical therapy, occupational therapy, public health, counseling, healthcare management and health informatics. The Health Science bachelor's degree program prepares graduates for entry-level health-profession careers in such areas as health science, health promotion, public health, and health and policy administration. Additionally, it prepares graduates seeking post-baccalaureate entry into graduate programs such as physician assistant studies, physical therapy, occupational therapy, public health, counseling, general MBA and health informatics. The curriculum is based on a strong foundation in the basic sciences along with the core public health subject areas. Content in the areas of health and wellness are emphasized. An interdisciplinary team of educators provides a holistic exposure to nutrition, exercise science, psychology, sociology, public health and economics, and their importance to patient-centered, humanistic healthcare delivery. The Health Science degree emphasizes the application and synthesis of knowledge and develops graduates who are the problem solvers and critical thinkers of tomorrow. Upon completion of the program, graduates are expected to: Apply fundamental biologic, socio-economic, behavioral, ethical, cultural and spiritual principles to the practice of health and wellness. Synthesize foundational knowledge and the results of inquiry and research. Effectively communicate health and wellness principles to diverse populations. Demonstrate empathy and respect inherent to humanism within health and wellness domains. Work collaboratively as a member of a health and wellness team to improve individual and community outcomes. The Health Science or pre-professional pathway contains specific physical science courses in biology, anatomy, physiology and chemistry. In consultation with their advisor, students choose additional courses that will prepare the student for their individual career goals. Students in health science are prepared for jobs in medicine and research or for applying to graduate and professional schools in a number of areas.

Bachelor of Science (BS)
Castleton University in Castleton, VT
The Castleton Natural Sciences Department offers a B.S. in Health Science that is intended primarily to prepare students for admission to graduate programs in physical therapy, occupational therapy, and other health care fields. Health Science majors must take a “core” of essential courses, such as Human Anatomy and Physiology, Chemistry, and Physics. We believe that a solid foundation in these disciplines is important to anyone with an interest in human health. But Castleton’s Health Science major also includes a great deal of flexibility, allowing students to choose courses that will prepare them for the specific graduate program or career they seek. Castleton has very strong undergraduate programs in Exercise Science and Athletic Training, and many classes in these areas may be used to satisfy the Health Science requirements. This allows you to take some specialized courses that can really set you apart from other applicants for graduate school. All Health Science majors are also required to complete an internship. For most students, this will be a “job shadowing” experience and we can arrange this with one of our local health care professionals during the academic year or, if more convenient, with a health care provider near your home over the summer. Most graduate programs in the health sciences now require this kind of practical experience prior to admission and we also see this as an important step in choosing the right career path. Castleton has an articulation agreement with Sage Graduate School in the Albany, NY area that offers preferred admission of our graduates to Sage’s Occupational and Physical Therapy programs, as long as our students meet certain criteria. After graduation from Castleton, students may earn a Masters in Occupational Therapy (MS-OT) or a Doctorate in Physical Therapy (DPT) from Sage. If you are interested in employment rather than graduate school, our Health Science program can prepare you for that as well. Our graduates are broadly trained and have excellent lab skills that employers are looking for. Many are now working in hospitals, in medical equipment sales, and other health-related careers. And we are offering a new career option in cooperation with Castleton’s Department of Health, Human Movement & Sport. Health Science students may complete the new Health Education minor and may become Certified Health Education Specialists.
