The Health Science program is a pre-professional program that provides a strong foundation in biomedical and clinical sciences knowledge and best practices. The major also prepares students for Physician Assistant Master’s programs and is the basis for a Radiologic Sciences track. CSJ has an articulation agreement with University of Western States in Portland, Ore. that offers our graduates (that complete the prerequisites) preferred admission into UWS’s chiropractic program and allows them to earn their bachelor and doctorate of chiropractic degrees in just seven years.

Medical assistants perform routine administrative and clinical duties in a healthcare practice and report directly to an office manager, physician, or other health practitioner. The medical assistant is a vital liaison between the doctor and patient, playing an important role in diagnosis and treatment. Upon completion of the Medical Assisting program, you will be eligible to complete the American Medical Technologists Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) examination and will be prepared for immediate employment in the field of healthcare in hospitals, community health centers, outpatient facilities, and ambulatory healthcare services. Graduates of the Medical Assisting program will be able to: demonstrate an understanding of basic anatomy, physiology, and disease processes of the human body as it relates to patient medical history; prepare examination room and patient for physical examination using proper procedures for taking vital signs and preventing infection by using aseptic techniques; employ a basic knowledge of law and ethics as they pertain to the medical office; perform basic medical office functions including patient scheduling, insurance and reimbursement procedures, basic coding, accounting, and bookkeeping; complete the Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) examination with a passing score; demonstrate academic skills required of all CCV graduates, including competency in writing, information literacy, oral communication, quantitative reasoning. Key information and advice for students in the Medical Assisting program: The Medical Assisting curriculum helps students develop key skills for performing both clinical and administrative tasks in healthcare settings. The two required Medical Assisting internships give students hands-on workplace experience and an opportunity to make connections with local healthcare facilities and employers. Students must complete a criminal background check in order to enroll in the Clinical and Administrative Medical Assisting courses. Students who have a misdemeanor charge involving theft, abuse, or drugs or any felony conviction may be prevented from participating in some of the required courses for the Medical Assisting program. A felony conviction may prevent employment in a medical assisting job. Some healthcare providers will accept a misdemeanor conviction not involving theft, abuse, or drugs. Students should check with the agency with which they want to work for its policy on prior convictions. Required courses for the Medical Assisting degree are offered at select CCV academic centers throughout the state and in online and hybrid formats. Students may choose to complete a majority of their courses online.

Occupational therapy is the use of purposeful activity and interventions to promote health and achieve functional outcomes in performance areas such as activities of daily living, work, and productive activities, and play or leisure activities. Achieving functional outcomes means to develop, improve or restore the highest level of independence to any individual who is limited by physical injury or illness, cognitive impairment, psychosocial dysfunction, mental illness, developmental or learning disability or an adverse environmental condition. Occupational therapy helps people of all ages lead productive, satisfying lives. The Occupational Therapy Assistant program is offered at the Newport County Campus. It is an evening/weekend program; however, fieldwork experiences are offered during the day. Although Occupational Therapy Assistant courses are offered at the Newport County Campus, the required general education courses may be taken at other CCRI campuses or sites prior to acceptance. All fieldwork courses shall be completed within 18 months following completion of the academic preparation. Students successfully completing the accredited program earn an Associate in Applied Science degree in Occupational Therapy Assistant (AAS_OCTA) and are eligible to sit for the national certification examination for occupational therapy assistants, which is administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy, Inc. (NBCOT). An individual must successfully pass the certification examination to apply for licensure to practice as a certified occupational therapy assistant in the state of Rhode Island.

Health Science: 3+1 Pre-Chiropractic

The College of St. Joseph and the University of Western States have established a 3+1 Pre-Chiropractic program. Under the program, students will matriculate at the College of St. Joseph for a minimum of 90 semester credits in course work leading toward a Bachelor of Science in Health Science. Acceptance of transfer credits or testing toward the completion of the degree requirements will be determined by current College of St. Joseph policies. Following completion of course work at CSJ, the University of Western States shall accept, for the entrance date of their choice, all students who have successfully completed the Pre-Chiropractic Program with a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher and meet all other criteria for admission, including letters of recommendation, personal interview, etc. Students who earn less than a 3.25 GPA, but at least a 2.75 GPA will be eligible for admission to UWS and will receive appropriate consideration in the admission process for having completed the Pre-Chiropractic Program, but will not receive the assurance of a seat reserved for students earning a 3.25 or higher GPA. Students must apply to the University of Western States one year in advance of the desired entrance date and must complete all required application procedures in a timely manner including submission of recommendation and a satisfactory interview. Students enrolled in the 3+1 Pre-Chiropractic program who successfully complete all course work in the first 3 quarters at UWS with C’s or better will be granted the Bachelor of Science from the College of St. Joseph, provided all graduation requirements have been satisfied. Students will pay the appropriate tuition and fees to each institution for all course work taken at that institution. During the first year of study at UWS, students will not be registered for courses at CSJ but will pay any fees required to maintain their registration toward the baccalaureate degree. Upon completion of the first year of study at UWS, students will be responsible for any fees regularly charged by CSJ for transfer of credits and awarding the Bachelor of Science degree.
