Classical Civilization
Bachelor of Arts (BA)
University of Vermont in Burlington, VT
The Classical Civilization major also provides excellent all-around preparation, but offers students a bit more flexibility. For example, all Greek and Latin language courses count towards it as do some related courses taught in other departments. Many students double-major in Classical Civilization and another field of interest. Learning Goals for Majors in CLASSICAL CIVILIZATION: That students possess a broad and detailed knowledge of Greek and Roman history (chronology, institutions, major figures and events, cultural practices and values) and that they be able to situate classical authors, literary genres, and particular works within an historical context; That they understand the nature of evidence and can use and evaluate it appropriately (e.g., primary v. secondary sources, evidence from art and archaeology, the transmission history and state of extant authors' works, etc.); That they have an informed appreciation of the pervasive influence of the Greek and Latin Classics over the centuries up to and including the present day.

Classics
Bachelor of Arts (BA)
Saint Michael's College in Colchester, VT
All classics majors take a full year of Latin and a full year of Greek (two semesters each), and then must take four additional reading courses in Latin and/or Greek. You could decide to concentrate on just one classical language for all those courses after your first-year sampling of both. By the time you graduate, nine of your ten courses will have been in a classical language, plus a choice of courses in translation, whether from the Humanities, History, Religious Studies or Philosophy Departments. Exercise your mind with rigor and precision as a Saint Michael's classics major, then flex your old-school thinking muscle in the modern world, as our students and graduates do each day as scholars, lawyers, librarians, businessmen and teachers. Excursions into classical literature and study travels to Europe help you discover that for excitement and substantial clues to the meaning of life, Ancient Greece and Rome are not only where it's been, but where it's at. A current student started a group that meets regularly to read the New Testament in Greek. Sometimes professors or the dean have lunchtime reading groups in classical languages. One of our seniors just completed an internship at WIRED magazine in Manhattan and now she’s pondering a career in editing. Two young men, one a recent graduate and one a current student, are novices with the Society of Saint Edmund (the resident founding order of priests on campus). One of those men started as a business major, switched to music and then discovered a love for classical philosophy along the way!

Comparative Literature
Bachelor of Arts (BA)
Middlebury College in Middlebury, VT
The mission of the Comparative Literature Program is to establish a strong common framework for all students of literature at Middlebury College by facilitating cooperation and communication among scholars and teachers of literature in all departments and programs involved. Comparative literature differs from other approaches to literature in that it prepares students to focus on the comparative study of national literatures. In particular, students receive training in at least two of these literatures in the original language along with comparative methodology. The Comparative Literature Program offers a core course on world literature, cross-lists several literature and culture courses with other departments and programs, and encourages students to consider the many Middlebury courses on English-language literature and on world literature in the original languages and in English translation. CMLT 0101 (Introduction to World Literature), our core course, is the first of a series of courses that center on the study of literature across cultures, times, and languages. The staff for each year’s version of CMLT 0101, normally offered in the spring semester, is drawn from at least three departments and programs. The Comparative Literature Program offers a major, but CMLT 0101 may be also counted toward the major in English and American Literatures, Literary Studies, and in some of the foreign literature and language departments.

Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)
University of Vermont in Burlington, VT
The Department offers an MA in Greek with a thesis and non-thesis option and an MAT in Latin in conjunction with the College of Education. We usually enroll 3-4 new students each year, and typically are able to offer some assistance to the most qualified applicants in the form of a Graduate Teaching Assistantship and/or through the Department's Prindle-Myrick-Kidder scholarship. The MAT is designed for two groups of people: those who already have licensure as secondary school teachers and those who do not yet have licensure. In all cases, the individual program of study must be approved by advisors in Classics for the field of specialization credits and in Education for the Education credits. The twenty-one credits in the field of specialization will consist primarily of Latin courses, but also Greek and Classics courses.

Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)
University of Vermont in Burlington, VT
The M.A.T. is designed for two groups of people: those who already have licensure as secondary school teachers and those who do not yet have licensure. Students must take comprehensive exams in their field of specialization as well as in education. Please consult with education for details about their comprehensive exam. The student must pass general comprehensive exams before the degree may be granted including: a written examination in Latin, an examination in ancient history (emphasis on Roman, but including Greek and, if appropriate, Near Eastern History), an examination in literature and philology, and an oral examination on the pedagogy of Latin. The Latin examination will be taken at the end of the Spring semester of the first year of study, (with a retake, if needed, in the week before the start of the first semester of the second year of study), the pedagogy examination at the conclusion of the practice teaching. For the ancient history examination, appropriate courses in ancient history may be substituted, if formally approved by classics faculty in advance. For the examination in literature and philology, the final examination in GKLT 300 Proseminar may be substituted. Substitutions are at the discretion of the faculty; they are not simply normal procedure. Written confirmation of specific substitutions after consultation with the graduate coordinator and relevant faculty is advised.
