As Business Technology and Management graduates, students are well-prepared to move into careers in business. Our broad-based curriculum encompasses accounting, computer applications, management, writing, speaking, and interpersonal skills. You'll learn about all aspects of the accounting cycle; business correspondence; effective oral presentation; document collaboration and communication systems; and the structure and function of human behavior in organizations. Our curriculum includes marketing, human resources, finance, and project management topics. You'll graduate with an understanding of the key characteristics and terminology of major business disciplines and have the skills to integrate them into corporate strategies. Graduates of this program will possess high-tech applied skills combined with management and leadership skills directly related to the use of technology in business and industry. The course content and sequence link with functional management areas through case studies and real-world situations. The focus throughout is how technical skills, interpersonal skills, and technology help to build a competitive strength in business. Students may enroll in the Business Technology & Management degree as freshman or they may enter as transfer students. Classes are offered in face-to-face format. A student with a Bachelor of Science in Business Technology & Management will be able to: Understand the accounting cycle including the processing and recording of typical cash receipts, cash payments, sales, vendor, and payroll transactions on an accrual and cash basis Interpret financial statements and prepare budgets Apply financial information to broad-based business decision making Write business letters, memos, email messages, instant messages, and blog posts Create reports using accurate research methods and citations Develop and deliver an effective oral team presentation on a strategic business topic Understand the structure and function of human behavior in organizations and how behavioral influences impact productivity, organizational effectiveness, and efficiency at the individual, small group, and organizational levels Develop marketing strategies to satisfy specific target audiences and create a marketing mix using the “4 Ps” of product, price, place, and promotion Apply and integrate marketing concepts with other business disciplines to affect a business strategy Perform human resources functions in the areas of selecting, training, and evaluating personnel Identify best practices in employee training, development, appraisal, and rewards Understand the basic operations, tools, and production functions of an organization involved in the efficient and effective production and delivery of goods and services Understand the genesis of project, program, and portfolio management Use the tools and techniques involved in initiating, planning, executing, monitoring, controlling, and closing projects Understand the key characteristics and terminology of the business disciplines of management, human resources, marketing, and finance and integrate these disciplines to develop and affect corporate strategies and plans The student, in conjunction with the department chair, develops a sequence of courses to best meet their background and needs that still satisfies the degree requirements.

The Business Technology & Management program includes all aspects of the accounting cycle, business correspondence, effective oral presentation, document and communication collaboration systems, the structure and function of human behavior in organizations and how behavioral influences impact productivity, organizational effectiveness, and efficiency at the individual, small group, and organizational levels. Students also learn to develop marketing strategies to satisfy specific target audiences and create a marketing mix using the “4 Ps”: product, price, place, and promotion. They also learn to apply and integrate marketing concepts with other business disciplines to effect a business strategy. In the area of human resources, students come to understand what is involved in selecting, training, and evaluating personnel and identify best practices in employee training, development, appraisal, and rewards. They also study the basic operations, tools, and production functions of an organization involved in the efficient and effective creation and delivery of goods and services. Finally, students focus on the phases of successful project management and come to understand the key characteristics and terminology of the business disciplines of management, human resources, marketing, and finance so that they can integrate these disciplines to develop and effect corporate strategies and plans. Graduates of this program enjoy a wide range of career options in business, industry, government, and public institutions. They may be office managers; staff accountants; accounting specialists; marketing and communication coordinators; sales and customer service managers; project managers; or small business owners. As an alternative to immediate employment, graduates may choose to enroll in the bachelor’s degree program at Vermont Tech or they may transfer to a bachelor’s degree program elsewhere with majors such as marketing or accounting. Highlights of the program include a formal business dinner where students dress in professional attire and learn the rules of formal dining. Students also learn resumé writing and job interview skills and attend a “mocktail” reception and interview. Seniors complete a capstone project which includes a team oral presentation judged by professionals from business and industry. A student with an Associate of Applied Science in Business Technology & Management will be able to: Complete the steps of the accounting cycle, including processing and recording typical cash receipts, cash payments, sales, vendor, and payroll transactions Prepare and interpret financial statements for service and merchandising businesses on an accrual basis Understand module integrated accounting software and use Quickbooks software to record and process typical transactions and prepare financial statements Use document and communication collaboration systems to create business documents and to design and develop newsletters, brochures, and other promotional materials Write business letters, memos, email messages, instant messages, and blog posts Create reports using accurate research methods and citations Develop and deliver an effective oral presentation Understand the psychology of face-to-face communication and the role of non-verbal communication Demonstrate successful team skills, effective listening, and professional behavior Effectively utilize resume-writing, interviewing, and job-seeking skills to advance career goals Understand the key characteristics and terminology of the business disciplines of management, human resources, marketing, and finance

The +2 Business Technology & Management program is a degree-completion program. Students must have at least 50 transferrable credits from an accredited institution. These credits should include 20 credits consistent with the general education requirements for an associate degree. Any deficiencies will require additional coursework. Student outcomes will correlate with the four-year bachelor’s degree. The student, in conjunction with the department chair, develops a sequence of courses to best meet their background and needs that still satisfies the degree requirements. A typical curriculum is shown here. All courses or equivalent coursework must be completed. All coursework from an accredited institution not used to meet the core requirement may be used toward the 120 credit minimum provided that it does not duplicate other coursework being used.

Dairy Farm Management Technology

The college’s 500-acre working farm and registered Holstein herd are integrated into all facets of the program and students are active participants in the management and operation of the farm. Practical experience at the farm is an especially valuable aspect of the program for students who lack a farm background. Additional coursework in accounting, finance, and computer applications help broaden students’ understanding of Dairy Farm Management. Students may also apply for admission to the Farm and Agricultural Resource Management Stewards (FARMS) program offered in cooperation with the University of Vermont. FARMS students make a seamless transition from Dairy Farm Management at Vermont Tech to a second two years at the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences at UVM. Full-tuition scholarships are available to Vermont students in the FARMS program. Students who complete a degree in Dairy Farm Management Technology can transfer seamlessly into bachelor’s programs in Business or Diversified Agriculture. Graduates of this program possess the skills and knowledge needed to operate a modern dairy farm. They frequently return to their home farms, are employed as herd managers, or work as breeding technicians, DHIA testers, or Peace Corps volunteers. MRI Physics for Technologists

This online course is designed primarily for radiologic technologists who would like to learn more about MRI physics with the goal of becoming an MR technologist. In addition, it would also potentially be very useful for current MR technologists who will be taking ARRT board exams in the future or would simply benefit from a more comprehensive and coherent MR physics training. Students in adjacent fields (biomedical engineering, radiological assistants) may also find this practical physics course highly valuable. Textbook readings will be combined with supplemental 3D animations and video lectures, flexible tutoring time with the instructor, as well as homework exercises specifically intended to either prepare you for the ARRT exam or develop practical skills for working as an MR technologists. Despite the online format, the instructor offers a weekly individual check-in discussion to help ensure that students are successfully progressing in the course. This is the first in a series of courses in development for the education of future MR technologists. The other courses will include Cross Sectional Anatomy and Pathology (taught by UVM radiologists), MRI Lab (in the UVM MRI research lab), and MRI Practicum. The goal is to establish an efficient and effective path to better prepare all future MR technologists.

Our new Music Technology and Business program gives you hands-on experience with digital audio production and a look at the inner workings of the music industry. With a strong foundation in music theory fundamentals, majors will learn to create and produce digital music, use industry-standard software and hardware, and culminate with either an internship in a recording studio or other music venue, or a senior project based in the music technology or business industries. The B.A. in Music Technology and Business is uniquely designed for singers and instrumentalists who seek to receive a well-rounded education in the technology and business of music while keeping active in performance. Students will learn how to use digital audio software and hardware in our brand new Recording Studio and Music Technology Computer Lab, and the inner workings of music industry through courses in music business and copyright and arts management, while receiving required performance credits through taking group piano courses as well as private lessons. In addition, students will also be able to gain real-world experience through an internship in a local studio or other music venue. The current music technology and business course offerings include: Introduction to Music Technology Creating Music for Video Live Sound Reinforcement Studio Production I, II, and III Music Business and Copyright Arts Management Unlike other concentrations in the B.A. Music, students in Music Technology and Business are not required to pass the Level II Audition as a prerequisite -- but rather as an exit requirement. Students must pass this audition on a classical or jazz instrument/voice before undertaking their Senior Project or Internship. We strongly recommend that students enroll in private lessons with one of our music faculty (MUL 074) every semester leading up to the Level II Audition. If you declare the major in Technology/Business, and decide to transfer to another concentration such as Jazz Studies or Theory/Composition, you must pass the Level II Audition before declaring that change in concentration.
