Bachelor of Arts (BA)
Bennington College in Bennington, VT
Here, acquiring and practicing language skills is never separate from actively investigating culture. This leads to generating ideas and not merely learning how to say things in a different language. Students of Italian reflect on the culture(s) of Italy critically from the first day of their introductory course. For example, during the first class period of Food in Italy, students are enabled and invited to express their opinions in Italian about a television ad on olive oil, using the few words they have just learned. Beginning students explore culture in courses that focus on themes such as food, the family, and public and private spaces. Low-intermediate students generally examine regional cultures through music, film, and journalism. The program alternates these courses with a course on Italian opera. High-intermediate and advanced students focus on literature and theory. Language proficiency is a fundamental goal, hence the study of grammar and vocabulary remains active also in advanced, literature courses. Often, students who do advanced studies in Italian also focus on other disciplines. The Italian program welcomes such students and encourages them to integrate their interests in other disciplines with Italian. Study abroad in Italy, whether only for Italian or combined with other disciplines, is also strongly encouraged. Through Bennington, Students of Italian have become interns of the Civitella Ranieri Foundation, in Umbria, and have taught English in Italy after graduation. Scholars in Italian, writers, and artists come to campus often to deliver lectures, performances, and to interact with students in class.

Bachelor of Arts (BA)
Bennington College in Bennington, VT
At Bennington, students learn a language while creating with it. From day one, reading and writing, listening and speaking are all directed towards discussing complex cultural ideas, leading students to perform, tell stories, conduct research, create art objects, and analyze cultural artifacts. Above all, content drives course design; faculty offer classes that draw on their own expertise and respond to the needs and interests of students. Faculty curate materials to stimulate intellectual discovery and teach students to read and listen critically to various types of texts. At all levels of instruction, small seminars allow students to challenge preconceived notions, compare and defend ideas, and develop linguistic proficiency. Students are encouraged to draw on their work in other disciplines, time abroad, and Field Work Term experiences, all of which enrich classroom discussions and inform advanced work. In projects for language classes, students have written and directed plays, made comics and animation, choreographed dances, performed songs, created films and video essays, and written poems, theses, translations, and creative works. The emphasis on language proficiency through diverse content allows our graduates to make a seamless transition into the working world of ideas. Recent graduates have pursued work in areas including arts administration, environmental entrepreneurship, cultural mediation, curriculum design, education, language pedagogy, research, theater and dance as well as pursuing graduate studies in literature, education, art history, and environmental studies.

Business Administration - Business Analytics
Bachelor of Science (BS)
University of Vermont in Burlington, VT
Today's organizations are drowning in vast amounts of data, the consequence of automated data collection tools and advanced database technology. A substantial challenge for organizations is how to use these vast amounts of data to best achieve or maintain a competitive advantage by improving customer relations, product development, business planning, internal processes and/or operations. This is where the field of Business Analytics (BA) comes into play. BA focuses on data-driven decision making with the ultimate goal being the conversion of data into context-specific information to facilitate high quality, timely, value-added business decisions. The BA concentration at the University of Vermont is designed to develop and improve students' technical, quantitative, and analytical abilities as well as their critical thinking skills through courses emphasizing the use of data, technology, optimization and statistical analysis, and predictive and exploratory modeling. Data and numbers are only part of the solution however - students must also understand organizational business models, information flows, and the importance of business processes within the organizational value chain. Students concentrating in BA will take classes covering content in the areas of information systems technology, quantitative methods/tools (operations research, statistics), and business applications (supply chain management, six-sigma quality, marketing research, business process improvement, etc). It is recommended that students who select the BA Concentration pursue a minor in Computer Science, Math or Statistics. The concentration is flexibly designed to align with student interests in a particular area and to incorporate content from the entire Grossman School of Business curriculum. Students in the BA concentration are required to take a minimum of four elective courses - one from each of the three areas. Two courses are required from one area, totaling five courses.
