Russian and East European Studies
Bachelor of Arts (BA)
University of Vermont in Burlington, VT
In 2014, Russia redrew the map of Europe; in 2016, Russia became the first country to operate militarily on Iranian soil since World War II. Russia is a country we need to understand. Given Russia’s increasingly vocal and visible presence in international affairs, there is a growing need for professionals who speak Russian and understand the politics, economics, and social dynamics of Russia. This is the time to major or minor in Russian and East European Studies (REES) at UVM. The faculty consists of widely published scholars and award-winning teachers who have many years of field experience living, working, and travelling in post-Soviet states including Russia, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan, as well as certain Eastern European countries like Poland. Disciplines represented include Russian language and literature, political science, anthropology, business, economics, history, mathematics, philosophy and sociology. Major Requirements Our REES program provides a stimulating blend of courses from disciplines including history, Russian language, and more. To major in REES, beginning language students should enroll in Russian 001 in their first semester and continue courses in the language every semester after that. If you already know some Russian before arriving at UVM, you should consult a Russian instructor for placement at the appropriate level of language study. The two-track major in Russian/East European Studies or Russian/East European Economics/Business provides a firm foundation in language, literature (in translation or in the original), as well as regional/area information in economics, political science, sociology, and history for both Eastern Europe and the post-Soviet region. See our requirements for the Russian & East European Studies major.

History
Bachelor of Arts (BA)
University of Vermont in Burlington, VT
To help students acquire these necessary skills and to gain insight into the meaning and matter of history, UVM's department of history offers a wide variety of courses aimed at the first-year student, all of which require analysis and writing in some form. The department recommends that incoming first-year students take any of its introductory courses, numbered 09 through 096, all of which assume no previous university-level work in history. Students should select the introductory course or course sequence that seems closest to their current interests. First-year students should not take any 100-level history courses without first consulting the instructor, and normally no first-year student will be allowed into a 100-level course without AP credits or their equivalent.

Religion
Bachelor of Arts (BA)
Middlebury College in Middlebury, VT
The Department of Religion insists that an understanding of religion is essential to a true comprehension of human culture, world history, global politics, and international conflict—not to mention the worldviews of billions of people. Our courses invite students to immerse themselves in the rich and varied texts and traditions of Buddhism, Confucianism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and Taoism (among others). They also challenge students to see the complex relationship these religions have had with each other in the arenas of politics, morality, and culture in the United States and the world. Viewing religious studies as a vital component to liberal arts education in today’s world, the Religion department actively contributes to interdisciplinary programs at Middlebury like American Studies, Environmental Studies, Women and Gender Studies, and International Studies.
