The Program The Social Work program prepares students for entry- level positions in social work in a variety of social agencies including public, nonprofit, private, Christian based and government. Students upon graduation are also prepared for professional licensure in Texas. The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of the Council of Social Work Education. Major A major in Social Work for the Bachelor of Science or the Bachelor of Arts degree consists of 36 semester hours. Minor A minor in social work is not offered. However, students must take 18-24 units in a related field such as sociology, criminal justice or psychology. A student may minor in one of these areas following the requirements of that program. Advanced standing Upon completion of this program many universities will offer graduates advanced standing in their social work graduate. Programs at UTA- Arlington and Baylor University offer graduate programs that we recommend to many of our students planning to remain in the Brownwood area. Courses The BSW curriculum provides a professional social work foundation that is transferable to different settings, population groups and problem areas. This foundation includes content on: human behavior and the social environment social welfare policy and services populations-at-risk research social work practices field practicum social work values and ethics human diversity social and economic justice Beyond the classroom A key component of the social work program is the opportunity to volunteer in local agencies in the community. Seniors are involved in a 450 hour internship program under the supervision of a social worker in the community. Internship opportunities include Brownwood Regional Medical Center, Texas Youth Commission, Juvenile Probation, Child Protective Services, nursing homes and child and family agencies. Baccalaureate social work graduates have knowledge, skills and a value base that has been augmented by professional social work supervision in social services. Social work's focus on the "person-in-environment" uniquely prepares BSW graduates to work effectively with individuals, families, small groups, communities and organizations. BSW graduates are employed in many different work settings under public and private auspices that may include: nursing homes hospices hospitals home care agencies substance abuse programs mental health services mental retardation/developmental disability services public health agencies aging services vocational rehabilitation services community action agencies family services agencies children & youth services residential treatment programs child & adult day care centers domestic violence programs homeless shelters criminal justice agencies schools (elementary & secondary) income maintenance programs legal services agencies Social Work Club Students are encouraged to join the Social Work club as a means to socialize with others through social activities and social action projects. The Club has been active in Black Heritage Week, Hispanic Awareness Days, Social Work Month, Alcohol and Drug Awareness Week and other local philanthropic events. Scholarships Scholarships, grants and loans are available through the university’s financial aid program. Faculty Courses are taught by highly qualified faculty who bring a variety of viewpoints and experiences to the classroom. The Program Director is Dan Humeniuk, MSSW. Dan has 28 years of experience working with troubled youth in the juvenile justice system. Tony Damron, MSW serves as Field Coordinator.
