Psychology Psychology Option of General Studies Associate of Arts Degree (A.A.) Program Code: PSYCH.AA This is a recommended program of study for students planning to pursue a bachelor's degree in psychology. Graduates of the Psychology Option of the General Studies A.A. degree program will be able to: Demonstrate familiarity with the major concepts, theoretical perspectives, empirical findings and historical trends in psychology Use the scientific method as a primary basis for engaging in critical thinking Use appropriately the technical language of the science of psychology in oral and written communication Use appropriate computer technology to complete relevant projects and assignments Interact effectively and work productively with people from diverse backgrounds Apply psychological principles to personal, social and organizational issues Successfully transfer into a bachelor's program in psychology or a related field Program Concentration 24 Credits PSY 1010 General Psychology 3 PSY 2010 Personality and Adjustment 3 PSY 2030 Child Psychology 3 PSY 2080 Abnormal Psychology 3 PSY 2190 Social Psychology 3 PSY 2110 Psychology and African Americans 3 Any Health course 3 Any Psychology course not listed above 3 Required General Education Courses 34-36 Credits English Composition I and II* 6 Humanities* Choose one course from each group: Group 1: One Speech course from approved general education list Group 2: One Art, Music, Theater, Philosophy, Literature or Foreign Language course from the approved general education list 6 Mathematics* MAT 1190 or MAT 2160 or MAT 2410 3-4 Science Two courses, one of which must carry laboratory credit (Recommended for UMCP: BIO 1130, BIO 1140, PHY 1010 or CHM 1010) 7-8 Social Sciences* Choose one course from each group: Group 1: One History course from approved general education list (HST 1410 recommended) Group 2: One Anthropology, Economics, Geography, Political Science, Psychology or Sociology course from approved general education list (SOC 1010 recommended) 6 Computer Literacy* CIS 1010 3 Elective Any credit course except PSY or PED 3 Credits Total Required for A.A.
