The Occupational Therapy Assistant program at Cabarrus College prepares students to assist people across the lifespan who have experienced physical, mental, or developmental conditions to develop or regain skills for everyday tasks. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment opportunities for OTAs are expected to grow much faster than average, especially in geriatrics and pediatrics. The OTA program offers a two year Associate of Science in Occupational Therapy Assistant degree. Instruction focuses on clinical reasoning skills to create customized, therapeutic interventions and adaptations to the client's environment. Students' progress from basic fundamental skill sets to demonstrated clinical competencies and, finally, to intensive fieldwork. Cabarrus College partners with over 90 different sites for clinical opportunities. Following graduation and prior to employment, students are required to pass the National Board for Certification Examination in Occupational Therapy Assistant. In addition, most states require licensure. A felony conviction may affect a graduates ability to sit for the national certification examination or to attain state licensure.
