Ph.D. in Management Science IIT Stuart offers a PhD in Management Science, which is the application of quantitative methods, analytical tools and computer models to decision-making problems in business, finance and management. IIT Stuart’s program emphasizes both analysis and synthesis: courses provide the tools to analyze problems into their component parts and then to synthesize new systems or new solutions. Once students master these skills, their dissertation work involves structuring a problem, gathering data when appropriate, and then solving it. The methodologies of management science can be applied to any aspect of business, finance or management. IIT Stuart’s PhD in Management Science is the only post-graduate business program in the Chicago area that allows student to earn a degree on either a part-time or full-time program. The program prepares students and working professionals for careers in university teaching and research, and for upper-level staff and management positions in business, government and consulting. About half of our graduates have chosen academic careers. Objectives of the PhD program •To prepare students for careers at universities or positions in industry, government, research institutes and consulting firms. •To provide students with a rigorous education in the methods and the use of analytic tools in order to conduct and evaluate meaningful research. •To contribute new knowledge to the field of business through applied research that addresses important problems in operations and finance. Program Requirements: In order to earn a PhD in Management Science, you will need to complete: •A cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0 in an approved program of study •A total of 64 Semester credits beyond the masters degree, 16 are devoted to dissertation research •A total of twelve semester courses in the first two years, including eight core courses and four advanced elective courses aligned with your interest. In the third and fourth year of study, you will take four advisor-approved open electives and register for dissertation credits to pursue and complete your doctoral dissertation. •Qualifying exam upon completion of the six courses in the first year for full time students. •Comprehensive exam upon completion of all coursework required for the first two years of study for full time students •Submission of dissertation •Oral defense of dissertation PhD program concentrations Note: For current semester deadlines for the requirements above, please refer to (select Important Dates and Forms) Finance The Finance concentration focuses on the application of management science techniques such as simulation, optimization and data analysis to the area of finance.
