About the program Graphic design majors prepare for jobs on the Web, in video and in print. Computer art coursework combines with instruction in typography and illustration, while communication and business courses help future entrepreneurial designers learn to attract and serve clients successfully. Housed within the art department, the graphic design major will be have traditional fine arts foundation, which focuses on creative problem solving. Courses in art history and a survey of contemporary graphic designers add perspective to the major. Classes are small; beginning classes have only 15-20 students, and upper-level courses are generally smaller. While small class sizes are desirable in any discipline, the close faculty-student relationship is especially important in hands-on work such as graphic design. Government statistics project a 10 percent jump in graphic design positions by 2016. Facilities Our new Mac-based computer lab provides the latest in image, sound and multimedia technology. The Augustana College Art Museum has a full-time staff and is readily accessible to art classes. Through traveling exhibiÂtions and the extensive permanent collection, students view original works of art as primary texts for class discussion, as well as inspiration for their own work. Outside the classroom Valuable internship opportunities are available at graphic design studios, large corporations and other organizations in the Quad Cities and Chicago areas, as well as in the Communications and Marketing office on campus. Throughout the academic year Augustana hosts visiting artists and scholars to speak on topics related to current exhibiÂtions, demonstrate to art classes or give presentations to supplement the liberal studies curriculum. Augustana College is within an hour's drive from the university town of Iowa City, and three hours from Chicago. Groups from Augustana take field trips to galleries and museums in these cities each year. Augustana sponsors an on-campus community program called Kaleidoscope, offering short-term art classes and workshops for children and adults. Many art and art education students serve as teachers and aides for Kaleidoscope, strengthening community ties and gaining valuable experience for their future work. Augustana ARTisans is the campus art club, a group that visits local art studios, volunteers in the local arts community and sponsors fundraisers for social concerns.
