Ours is a department staffed by faculty with expertise in literature (from Anglo-Saxon to the present), linguistics (from phonology to syntax, sociolinguistics to second language acquisition), and writing (lower- and upper-division). We offer a B.A. in English to prepare students for graduate studies and for careers in such areas as law, management and government. Students who desire to teach at the secondary school level may then follow the English Teacher Preparation Program (ETPP). Both the Major and the ETPP have undergone some revision. Incoming freshmen therefore have the opportunity to include an Area of Specialization in their degree, for example, World Literature, Genre, Linguistics, or British Literature. The ETPP has been redesigned as the English Major with a Credential Emphasis (EMCE). Andy Troup, Chair The department also offers minors to complement majors in other disciplines: a Minor in English Literature, a Minor in Linguistics, and a Minor in Children's Literature. In addition, we have two post-baccalaureate certificates, one in Writing and the second in Children's Literature. The department's M.A. in English, which is open to candidates with backgrounds in English and other disciplines, qualifies students to teach at community colleges and for careers in the public sector. In addition to literature, the M.A. program emphasizes training in language, reading and writing, critical analysis, as well as research methods.
