Naropa University - Boulder, CO

  • Master of Fine Arts

The Creative Writing program at Naropa University is a low-residency program that allows you to obtain a creative writing degree from Naropa's Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics without having to relocate to Boulder, Colorado. Informed by Naropa's contemplative orientation, the low-residence master's in Creative Writing is a comprehensive degree that encompasses the study of literature (with a special emphasis on contemporary, experimental and avant-garde works), literary theory and history. Online workshops in poetry and prose give you the opportunity to receive feedback on your work as well as to compassionately critique the work of others, a practice that will nurture your development as both a writer and editor. A remarkable feature of Naropa's Creative Writing MFA is the Summer Writing Program. You will spend eight weeks on our Boulder campus (over two or three summers) learning from and interacting with your fellow students, Naropa faculty plus leading writers, meditation experts, performers, and cultural critics from all over the country. Considered a terminal degree—the highest degree awarded in applied creative writing—the Master of Fine Arts degree combines online classes and workshops, contemplative practice, and summer attendance at the Jack Kerouac School's famous Summer Writing Program into an experience designed to help you transform personally and artistically.
